The band Juana got their name after toying with the term "Joe" referring to the "average American" and that "Juana" refers to the "average Filipina" as to the term "Juan" is for the common Filipino. Juana also represents the modern Filipina without compromising her trade mark Maria Clara characteristics. The band was formed when Sheila (former member of Keltcross and Prettier than Pink) and then bassist Magoo del Mundo met through a mutual friend at about the same time when Sheila was thinking of forming a female fronted band. They met Marvin Dival when he answered their ad in a paper that calls for a guitarist. In December 15, 2005 they released their debut album Misbehavior under Warner Music Philippines, a major record label, although they are still classified as indie musicians.Later on the band replaced the two original male members with Harold Luy on bass and Eboy Eduarte on guitars, and is still their current line-up. Being a former member from previous bands, Sheila and former bassist Magoo being no stranger to music himself (a sessionist of Joey Ayala and a founding member of a UST-based organization TUNOrG), the music that they formed is a mix of what influenced them as an artist. Shirley with her alternative background and Magoo's jazz musical styling. Juana showed how this genres can be incorporated together to form their own unique sound. Though they are still struggling to rise among the pool of mainstream local bands. As to describing their sound, they consider themselves to be on the "alternative pop rock" genre. The band also showcases a female vocalist and a female drummer that's not very common on the local band scene. Juana carries a fresh sound born out of influences ranging as far apart as jazz to progrock and the Eraserheads to Natalie Merchant; a sound that they hope shall continue to evolve as their own personalities evolve as well; since music, just like life, never reaches a true standstill. Contrary to popular belief, Juana is not just one woman rocking away, but is infact composed of Shirley de Guzman on vocals, Marvin Dimal on guitars, Sheila Rosete on drums and Magoo del Mundo on bass. Their diverse musical backgrounds, just like their personalities, give the unique and original flavor that Juana brings to the music table. Juana has toured the bar circuit, having played at Mayric’s, Freedom Bar, CityJam, Bloogum, Saguijo, Chaciquos, Hard Rock Café, 19East and also rocked the Araneta Colisuem, among other notable venues. They have played with Dictalicense, Spongecola, Stonefree, Rivermaya, Kitchie Nadal, Join the Club, Barbie Amalbis & The Dawn among a long list of respected and notable musicians in the Philippines.
